About the Baume & Mercier watch brand
With years of experience in the watchmaking industry, Baume & Mercier has moved with technology to create watches that will appeal to timepiece collectors for generations to come. The brand was founded by two brothers, Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume.
The firm was established in 1830 and is now one of the oldest watch retailers in Switzerland. At Repairs By Post, we have been inspired by the brand’s motto:
“Accept only perfection; only manufacture watches of the highest quality”.
Louis-Victor built watches to last a lifetime and was one of the first watch inventors to create pieces for both genders. His interest was inspired when he made his daughter Mélina a gold pocket-watch in 1869. This decision inspired the brand to develop innovative designs for both sexes during the period 1920-1940, techniques that are still used on ladies’ watchmaking collections today.
Baume & Mercier watches have been made in Switzerland since the beginning of the brand. They have been accredited with many awards at various international exhibitions. In 1919, the firm was awarded the famous “Poinçon de Genève” which is a token of exceptional craftsmanship and quality and still to this day the brand withholds true professionalism.
This exceptional watch brand continues to offer its customers watches that are worthy of celebrating. Baume & Mercier have sculpted watchmaking tradition with a history that goes back over 180 years. If you are the owner of a Baume & Mercier, watch you must keep your piece of timepiece history in the best shape with watch servicing.

Baume & Mercier maintenance and care tips
REGULAR BAUME & MERCIER MAINTENANCE
If you would like your Baume & Mercier piece to stand the test of time, it must be handled with some care and attention. Keep your watch’s original gleam, by sending it to Repairs By Post for regular maintenance. If your Baume & Mercier watch is water-resistant, we advise that it is cleaned with a soft dry cloth to preserve it from wear and tear. The metal bracelet and can also be gently cleaned with a dry brush which will eliminate dust that may arise on the timepiece.
Baume & Mercier watches are crafted with the resistance to withstand splashes of water. If your timepiece is immersed in sea water, in that case, it should be rinsed with a soft cloth soaked in tepid fresh water (making sure the crown is screwed down or pushed in) as this will release any salt deposits that may aggravate your skin.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR BAUME & MERCIER WATCH WELL MAINTAINED?
If you look after your Baume & Mercier, watch it will be valuable to you for a lifetime. Like most pieces of jewellery, it is essential to send them away for maintenance and repair. At Repairs By Post, we have years of experience fixing Baume & Mercier watches and have learned from the mistakes of others. Here is a list of things to avoid when wearing a Baume & Mercier watch.
TEMPERATURE
Baume & Mercier watches should not be exposed to extreme temperatures (above 60ºC/140ºF, or below 0ºC/32ºF). Extreme temperatures could damage the watches structure and may reduce the service life of the battery and affect the liquidity the watches lubricants. Both Baume & Mercier mechanical and quartz watches are delicate to severe changes in temperature. Therefore, it is advised to avoid them as much as possible.
SPORTS
Baume & Mercier have suggested that while wearing their brand’s watch, users should remove them when playing games. Accidents can happen, and this will reduce the chance of your timepiece needing to be sent away for watch repair.
It is recommended that a Baume & Mercier watch is removed during sports activities such as tennis, golf or mountain biking, as this will protect it from vibrations that could damage the watches internal movement.
CHEMICAL PRODUCTS
Remove your Baume & Mercier watch before touching any chemical products. Chemical products can damage fine jewellery which leaves many owners devastated. Direct contact solvents and industrial/domestic detergents are not recommended. Like many pieces of jewellery avoid spraying cosmetics and perfumes around your timepiece – not only could this tarnish the metal but it could potentially damage the watch’s seals.
WATER RESISTANT BAUME & MERCIER WATCHES
Water-resistant models should have their seals checked every 2 years. If you wear your watch while bathing, then this should be done annually to ensure it maintains its water-resistance.
You must check the water-resistance of your watch as it protects the movement from dirt, moisture and any deterioration when immersed in water. Baume and Mercier recommend that you have your watch serviced as like any watch the seals may be prone to wear and tear. Baume and Mercier suggest a water-resistance around every 12 months.
If your Baume & Mercier watch becomes submerged in water, do NOT pull out the winding crown or press the push buttons to change the date or start the chronograph. This movement could allow water to enter the case of the watch and could damage it.
If condensation forms we advise you contact as watch repair service to remove the condensation and renew the water-resistance of the watch.
