The history of Eterna watches
Founded in 1856, Josef Girard, a physician, and Urs Schild a school teacher began the workshop named “Dr Girard & Schild”. It wasn't until 1989 that the brand name Eterna appeared on the watches. In 1904 they showcased their first wristwatch which contained an alarm. The brand continued to grow and develop, and in the 1930s, they showed the watch with the smallest baguette movement.
Famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl chose an Eterna watch for him and his crew to sail across the Pacific in a balsa wood raft which was named Kon-Tiki. In 1948 Eterna produced another first; the Eterna-Matic. Its movement has an oscillating weight mounted on ball bearings to reduce friction and shock. The five spheres on this watch became the Eterna logo.
In 1958 Eterna had another first, their Eterna-Matic KonTiki design, Eterna’s first sports watch.
Continuing with this theme, in the 1970’s Eterna produced its first electronic wristwatch.
The Porsche Design collection was released in 1998.
The designs and technical ability of Eterna’s designers have continues into the new millennium with Calibre 6036, the next year followed with the ultra-thin manufacture automatic 3030, in 2007 the Calibre 6037 Adventist, the first timepiece to incorporate the new Eterna proprietary calibre 3843.
